The Maine Department of Administrative & Financial Services

The Security and Employment Service Center (SESC) is looking for an organized and detail orientated Accounting Support Technician. The SESC provides financial and human resources support to the Departments of Labor, Public Safety, Professional and Financial Regulation and the Maine Emergency Agency. Financial Service Centers provide professional financial expertise to manage the financial activities of multiple Departments and bureaus, with accounts that vary in size and complexity. Services for customer agencies include accounting and financial processing, cash management, budget development and monitoring, financial analysis, grant management, legislative support, and administrative functions.

We are looking for a motivated candidate with organizational skills, good communication skills, strong teamwork skills, accounting knowledge and good working knowledge of Office 365 applications. 

The SESC is a well-balanced, cohesive team that supports one another. Our Service Center has a track record of employee retention and satisfaction.

This position will be a full-time, long-term, limited-period position. The selected candidate will assist with special projects relating to American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds for up to 3 years. These employees enjoy the same benefits, rights, and privileges as full-time employees. Work will be performed under limited supervision. The position is home-based for the next few months and then will be based in Augusta, Maine.



  • Review and process accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel expenses, pre- and post-audit billings and payments in order to ensure compliance with state policies and procedures and satisfy financial obligations.
  • Set-up, monitor, and make adjustments and closing entries in order to document financial activity for a project or program.
  • Review and balance subsidiary and control accounts, collections, inventory, and other accounts to ensure reasonableness and accuracy.
  • Monitor status of accounts, budgets, and contracts.


REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:  (A position may not be assigned all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be assigned).

  • Applies basic accounting theory to account for revenues, expenditures, transfers, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and inventory in accordance with established standards in order to accurately report results of agency operations.
  • Reviews and verifies the correctness and classification of transactions posted to accounting journals, general ledger accounts, and other subsidiary records in order to ensure accuracy of records.
  • Reviews and processes accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel expenses, financial contracts, pre- and post-audit billings, and payments in order to ensure compliance with state policies and procedures and satisfy financial obligations.
  • Reviews and balances subsidiary and control accounts, collections, inventory, and other accounts in order to ensure reasonableness and accuracy.
  • Monitors status of accounts, budgets, and contracts in order to provide information to senior accounting staff.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:  (These are required to successfully perform the work assigned).

  • Knowledge of basic accounting theories, principles, methods, practices, and terminology.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and systems.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of standardized desktop technology and products.
  • Ability to apply accounting principles in locating and correcting accounting errors.
  • Ability to verify fiscal source documents and application of fees, refunds, collections, and discounts.
  • Ability to review fiscal transactions for conformity with applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  (Entry level knowledge, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following course work/training and/or experience).

Two years of practical work experience providing complex technical accounting support in a professional accounting environment.  Experience must demonstrate a comprehension of basic accounting principles and standards.
