With some of the most remote and rugged country in the Northeastern US, including Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak, 46 other mountain summits, more than 50 pristine lakes and ponds, and over 200 miles of hiking trails. Are you ready to begin your adventure as a dedicated, hardworking Maintenance Mechanic at Baxter State Park, the iconic four-season wilderness park?
As a Maintenance Mechanic, a typical season might include the following:
- Supporting the Baxter State Park Maintenance Department with day-to-day maintenance in the Park and at its headquarters in Millinocket.
- Assisting with carpentry tasks at park campgrounds, group sites, gatehouses, backcountry campsites, and elsewhere.
- Helping with the seasonal startup and shutdown of Park building systems, including plumbing and off-grid electrical.
- Working with Park Mechanic on seasonal vehicle and snowmobile fleet maintenance and repairs.
- Participating in Park road maintenance and capital projects, including ditch and culvert cleaning, blow down clearing, culvert installation, and bridge construction.
- Maintaining a clean workshop and Park vehicle.
- Assisting with search and rescue events in the park.
Minimum Requirements:
- Two (2) years of experience in general maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, mechanical systems, and buildings.
Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills or experience:
- Knowledge of Advanced Wilderness First Aid techniques.
- Knowledge of chainsaws and previous training in felling, limbing, and bucking trees.
- A Class A or B Driver’s License
- Knowledge of modern Search and Rescue techniques and practices.

- Retirement Plan– The State of Maine contributes 13.00% of pay to the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MainePERS), on behalf of the employee.
- Gym Membership Reimbursement– Improve overall health with regular exercise and receive up to $40 per month to offset this expense.
- Health and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts– Set aside money pre-tax to help pay for out-of-pocket health care expenses and/or daycare expenses.
