The Department of Marine Resources, Bureau of Marine Science, is seeking motivated individuals to fill a vacant limited period Marine Resource Specialist position in Boothbay Harbor.

 

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is a scientific support position for various research and management projects, several of which are meant to evaluate the impact of floating offshore wind on marine resources. 

The position will assist scientists in coordinating and collecting data for various research projects and will be responsible for assisting in the logistical coordination of field and lab work, conducting work both independently and as part of a team, and entering data into appropriate databases. Some examples of offshore wind projects that this position will participate in include an offshore bottom trawl survey, a highly migratory species tagging project, and a larval survey. In addition to offshore wind projects, this position will be tasked with supporting other DMR projects, which include but are not limited to, the ME-NH inshore trawl survey, the inshore acoustic telemetry monitoring program, and the recreational fish program. Degree of participation in each program will fluctuate seasonally to meet the Department’s staffing needs and priorities.   

This position will be required to travel throughout the state as needed for work and may be required to stay aboard a vessel for one or more subsequent nights as required by any given research project. Work may be conducted in inclement weather and adverse conditions such as rough seas. The position may be required to act as a team leader in the field for any of these projects. Between projects the position will be responsible for data entry, purchasing equipment, repairing and maintaining equipment, tracking purchases, processing biological samples, and preparing for each survey.

REQUIRED SKILLS INCLUDE: 

  • Extensive at sea work experience in a variety of conditions and the ability to work independently under physically challenging conditions.
  • Have already established, or the ability to develop, relationships with fishing industry members.
  • Ability to use ArcGIS, Microsoft Access, and statistical programs.
  • Working knowledge of basic mathematical operations and statistical techniques.
  • Working knowledge of resource assessment survey techniques and sampling protocols. 
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge/ability to identify marine organisms common in the Gulf of Maine.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Intermediate education, training, and/or experience in the compilation and summarization of scientific field and laboratory data including coursework or demonstrated experience in natural resource science, management, technology, laboratory, or field work.

DESIRED (BUT NOT REQUIRED) SKILLS INCLUDE:

  • Experience working on bottom-trawl and lobster vessels
  • Extensive knowledge of Atlantic bluefin tuna life history
  • Experience using heavy fishing tackle on boats and handling/tagging large pelagic fishes
  • Experience using and deploying acoustic telemetry equipment
  • SCUBA Diving experience (Open Water or higher certification)
