The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Remediation and Waste Management, is seeking to fill an Oil & Hazardous Materials Responder I vacancy in Portland.

 

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position serves as a field response team member during the cleanup of oil, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction incidents.  Responsibilities include the following: managing the cleanup of spills, including hiring contractors; keeping detailed notes and writing reports about incidents; operating watercraft and other response equipment; and maintaining and repairing field safety and response equipment.  

The successful candidate must be able to work well in a team environment and possess excellent communication skills. The position participates in a regional after hours on-call rotation and must live within one hour of the Portland Office. The work is physically demanding, must be performed under all environmental conditions, requires rapid and effective decision-making under stress, and may involve life-threatening situations. Work is performed under limited supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Geology, or other physical science; -OR- a Bachelor’s Degree in an area other than a Science related field with a minimum of 16 credit hours of science courses and one year experience in environmental science inspection or investigation work. Directly related experience may be substituted for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Employees in this class must be able to do the following as a condition of employment: 1) be able to pass the required physical examination; 2) be able to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and a personnel protective Level A suit; 3) meet OSHA fit test requirements and pass a quantitative fit test; 4) be clean shaven everywhere the respirator touches the face during all work and on-call duty hours; and 5) possess a valid Maine driver’s license. There is a nine-month probationary period.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and experience: 

  • Knowledge of the National Incident Management System and Incident Command System.
  • Experience in petroleum and hazardous materials spill response and use of response technologies.
